Why have we set ourselves this ambitious goal?

Increasing lifestyle-related diseases

In recent years, while populations in Asia have grown in wealth and affluence, lifestyle-related diseases have also increased, accounting for more than 70 per cent of all deaths¹. Modifiable factors such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition, smoking and excess alcohol consumption have fuelled the rise of non-communicable diseases² (NCD), such as cancer, diabetes, respiratory and heart disease, as well as mental conditions and disorders.

Increasing morbidity and mortality

At the same time, the environment is increasingly identified as a significant cause of disease with research linking NCDs with environmental factors. We also know that Asia is particularly affected by climate change. The World Health Organization and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have warned that climate change will increase morbidity and mortality in this region³.

Altogether this is a critical situation that threatens to cripple public healthcare with rising rates of morbidity and mortality and represents a humanitarian crisis for the entire life insurance industry, for society, and for all people living in the communities in which AIA operates across Asia.
